South Glamorgan is a preserved county on the south coast of Wales
that includes the capital city of Cardiff,
the scenic Vale of Glamorgan and part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast.
Cardiff is both a city of historic attractions and contemporary
culture. The old city docklands—called Cardiff Bay
and Mermaid Quay—are
now trendy hotspots for dining, nightlife and water sports, while Cardiff Castle
boasts 2,000 years of history. Just across the bay, the Vale of
Glamorgan is the antithesis of the capital. A valley of green, rolling
hills and small villages, the Vale boasts such gems as the picturesque
market village of Cowbridge,
the megalithic Tinkinswood Burial Chamber—which
dates from 4,000 BC—and the Victorian seaside town of Penarth.
The latter is known for its gardens, particularly Cosmeston Lakes Country Park,
and its popular pier and esplanade from which Waverley and Balmoral paddle
steamers sail to the Somerset coast
in summertime. And in Barry, the
Vale’s largest town, visitors can take in the Tall Ships Festival
every September and the Grade 1 listed Dyffryn Gardens.
The highlight of South Glamorgan, however, is arguably the county’s
dramatic coastline, part of which is the Glamorgan Heritage Coast,
a 22-km (14-mi) stretch of protected area. Its miles of footpaths and
country lanes take in rugged cliffs, secluded coves and golden beaches,
making it a favourite destination for cyclists and walkers.
